Lights With Meaning
The meaning behind Ahoroa
Ahoroa means “bright moonlight” in te reo Māori. For our studio, the name evokes the gentle light that brings calm and warmth to a space. It reflects what we hope our pieces bring into the home: light, connection and room for shared stories.
We’re a whānau-owned studio based in Rangitīkei, Aotearoa New Zealand, owned and operated by Freshen Up Down Under. We create lighting and home décor that bring character and meaning to everyday spaces.
Our story
After buying a few decorative lamps for our own home, we began imagining the designs we would love to see. That curiosity led us to explore creating our own.
What started as a personal project caught the interest of our whānau and friends. Their encouragement gave us the confidence to share our creations, and Ahoroa Studio was born.
Today, we design and make our Māori and Pasifika-inspired lamp collection in Rangitīkei. We use 3D printing to create the shades, with attention to their form and finish.
Light, form and meaning
From the beginning, we wanted our lamps to look beautiful both switched off and illuminated. Their patterns bring a decorative presence during the day and a warm glow at night.
Our collection draws inspiration from Māori and Pasifika art, nature and cultural traditions. Each design has its own kōrero (story), exploring themes such as aroha (love), whānau (family), connection, growth and new beginnings. The product stories explain the inspiration and our studio’s interpretation.
Whether chosen as a gift, to celebrate a milestone or for your own home, we hope each piece holds meaning beyond its appearance. That is the idea behind Lights With Meaning.
Looking ahead
We look forward to developing more lighting, home décor and personalised creations. Thank you for supporting our small business and being part of our story.
